Trapped in the Loop: When Screens and Thoughts Steal Time

Which activities make you lose track of time?

It’s strange how time slips away unnoticed when I’m caught between the glow of a screen and the echo chamber of my thoughts.

Scrolling through endless feeds, switching between apps, reading articles I forget moments later these digital activities don’t always bring me joy, yet they devour hours like minutes. I open my phone to check a message and suddenly I’ve lost an hour to mindless browsing. It’s not the content that holds me; it’s the escape.

Even more dangerous is when this screen time mixes with overthinking. One negative thought sparks another, and soon I’m spiraling reliving past conversations, imagining worst-case futures, doubting myself, comparing my life with curated lives online. It’s not just time I lose; it’s peace, clarity, and presence.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m truly “doing” anything at all or just drifting.

But noticing this pattern is the first step. Now I’m learning to pause. To breathe. To choose mindful moments over automatic scrolling. To swap doom-scrolling for journaling. To use the screen as a tool not a trap.
